Write Smart! A Written Language Program for Elementary and Middle School Children

Pediatric Speech and Language Specialists uses the "6+1 Traits of Writing" Program. This program conforms with standardized testing required by the State of Arizona. The advantages of trait-based writing are that it, 1) captures the qualities of what good writing looks like, 2) provides a common vocabulary for talking about writing, and 3) allows the writer to become a self-evaluator. Using the "6+1 Traits of Writing," children learn the criteria that define quality performance. Children learn to use the following Traits:
  1. Ideas: Ideas are the message or the content used in writing.
  2. Organization: This is the structure of your written work, the logical pattern of ideas or meaning.
  3. Voice: Voice is the style one uses or the convictions that are painted through the use of words.
  4. Word Choice: This is the rich, vivid, particular language that stirs and enlightens the reader.
  5. Sentence Fluency: This is the sound of the word and word patterns. Fluency refers to the flow of the language.
  6. Conventions: Conventions are the writer's use of grammar and the mechanics of writing.
  7. Presentation: This is the form and look of the written work.
Skills addressed on are determined by the child's needs but may include:
  • summarizing
  • editing
  • writing grammar
  • planning
  • proofreading
  • dictionary use
  • organizing
  • punctuation
  • thesaurus use
Written language is critical to academic success. As children get older and progress in school, the demands of the curriculum require greater competency with written language skills. Notes are taken, reports are written and tests have essay questions that assess one's knowledge or thoughts on a subject. ALL REQUIRE WRITING!
