This program is designed for children with a diagnosis of verbal apraxia of speech. These children may not be able to coordinate the oral motor movements necessary to produce and combine these units to form syllables, words, phrases, and sentences. These children may be unable to speak or simply hard to understand.
The signs and symptoms of apraxia may include:- Limited or lack of babbling or sound play as an infant
- Phoneme replacements or deletions
- Limited repertoire of sounds to make words
- Oral scanning and groping
- Able to produce isolated sounds but not put them in words
- Difficulty moving across syllables to make words
- Strings of words may result in unintelligible or difficult to understand speech
Children with apraxia need an intensive intervention experience! This program is designed as an intense summer experience. Children receive therapy four days a week for a period of seven weeks. This clinical program focuses on the evaluation and treatment of children with apraxia of speech. Motor planning based methods, strategies, and techniques will be used for intervention. The therapists implementing this program have strong skills in this motor planning approach for apraxia.
